Day 20 - Dreaming in the Foothills

October 8th, 2025

We get an early start, leaving Devils Tower. The weather is clear and warm, perfect for a travel day. Our next stop is Dayton, WY (240 miles), just west of Sheridan. Nestled at the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, it’s also the base of the famous Beartooth Highway—a scenic 69-mile route (U.S. Route 212) connecting Red Lodge, Montana, to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park.

The drive to Dayton is easy, passing cattle ranches, trucks full of cattle, and, of course, that beautiful, wide-open countryside Wyoming does best. Before long, we arrive at the little Foothills Campground. We’re greeted by the owner, Christy, when we check in. She tells us she’s owned the campground for four years but also runs a plumbing business—and something has to give. “Haven’t had a day off in years,” she says. “So the campground is for sale,” I tell her. It’s a sweet spot, and she should have no problem selling.

We find a quiet camp spot and settle in for the night. Unfortunately for us, an early snowstorm has closed the Beartooth Highway, so we decided to head north back toward I-90 through some great cattle country, planning to reach Livingston, MT, in the morning, so the queen can get her hair done.

Dinner is delicious pork chops on the grill, followed by an early bedtime. As I’m falling asleep, I find myself thinking that running a small campground in a foothill town in Wyoming would be a pretty sweet gig. Maybe in my next life. Keep dreaming. 😎🍺
